Consumer’s Health Care Experience
The health care system can be quite a frustrating experience for the consumer. Right from the very beginning of the process, it seems to be a challenging affair.
- Who do you call?
- Where do you go?
- What do you do?
- How much do you pay?
When it comes to personal health, the above questions should be answered objectively by a resource that has experience with the processes and is able to navigate the health care system complexities.
A Medical Case Advisor role in the healthcare industry will make it easier to select the right clinicians, obtain quality care, and clarify benefits coverage. It will also result in better patient decision-making, efficient and cost-effective use of healthcare services until their case is settled.
Taking A Cue From The Financial Industry
The role of a Medical Case Advisors got its inspiration from the financial industry model, which makes sure that consumers have a wide range of competitive resources at their reach to make informed financial decisions.
In the financial industry, consumers can consult with advisors / brokers who serve both as advocates, helping consumers navigate the markets, and as experts; helping consumers make informed decisions. This array of financial experts ensures that the focus is on investing wisely.
The truth, however, is that a comparable set of resources does not exist in healthcare to help patients find the right doctor or the best options for their care. This is the reason why Healthcare PI is assuming the role of a Medical Case Advisors..
Injuries Diagnostics
After a car crash, slip or fall, it is very important to diagnose and document your injuries. The best place to start diagnosing is right at the accident scene. It is vital that you allow the rescue team to examine and document while at the scene when you might be in such a shock.
Often times, it’s not uncommon to see injured persons refusing medical care and attention from paramedics or even refuse to be transported to the hospital emergency room as they tell responders that they are not injured. Then, later on, pains may develop and even internal bleeding that could lead the victim to seek emergency aid after the accident.
It could take up to a couple of hours or even days before inflammation and pains set in after an accident. In addition, while fractures could be really painful, it is possible to have a fracture and be unaware of it. Not being aware of a fracture and continuing with normal daily activities could pose serious health risk and even in some instances life threatening situations.
For instance, one may not notice a spinal fracture. If this is left untreated and undiagnosed, it could lead to paralysis. There are also some injuries which might not be noticed immediately such as: spinal disc injuries, tears to muscles and ligaments, and brain injuries.
Traumatic injuries might not show up for a couple of hours, and whenever you have a blow to the head, there is the possibility that you might have a brain injury. Swelling of the brain does take some hours and the victim should be carefully observed for any signs of brain injury, such as difficulty talking, severe dizziness, excessive sleepiness, headache, nausea and slurred speech.
If there are any of the symptoms, the patient should be transmitted to the emergency room immediately.
Emergency Room
The hospital emergency room is the best place to continue the diagnosis of your injuries. When it comes to getting to the emergency room, there are two choices. You could be transported by emergency services right from the accident scene, or you could transport yourself later on when the pains starts developing. Emergency room staff will proceed with a complete diagnosis of your vitals, as well as a physical examination and X-rays in most cases. This visit should be able to tell you any immediate life threatening circumstance.
X-Rays
The x-ray is a common tool to diagnose if you have a bone fracture or not. However, x-rays are limited because they provide little information about soft tissues as a diagnostic tool. Since they only provide a flat, two-dimensional picture, they cannot differentiate between the various layers of body tissue, ligaments, muscle and spinal discs.
MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a diagnostic tool test that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy that creates pictures of structures of the body. In most cases, MRI is able to provide different information about body structures that cannot be seen with an X-ray, ultrasound or CT scan. It also shows injuries that normally cannot be seen with other methods. Most soft tissue injuries, including spinal disc injuries, can only be diagnosed using an MRI.
Medical Doctors
Another option that you could use in diagnosing your injuries after an accident is to pay a visit to your family doctor or MD. The medical doctors do not specialize in diagnosing and treating soft tissue and spinal disc injuries. Family doctors or MD may be a viable option when you have lacerations in need of stitches or have a fracture that requires the services of a specialized physician.
Chiropractic Physicians
The chiropractor is trained in the diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue and spinal disc injuries. The chiropractor may take X-rays of your spine, take a complete history of your health, and conduct a thorough physical examination. They are well trained to preform diagnostics of auto-accidents injuries in such a way that the patient could return to the same health status prior to the accident.
Chiropractors serve as an expert in treating auto-accident victims and may send you out for an MRI, or for a consultation with a neurologist or orthopaedic doctor.
The chiropractor then coordinates your care and diagnostic testing with specialty physicians, and provides a final report and recommendations regarding your injuries including the seriousness of your injuries, any degree of permanent impairment, and the need for on-going future care.
Orthopaedic Doctors
In cases of fractures, ligament tear, and spinal disc injury, the doctor that is normally consulted is the orthopedic doctor. The orthopedic doctor will usually see you after your MRI report have been reviewed by your chiropractic doctor and determined that you may need a surgical consultation.
The orthopedic doctor will carry out evaluations to determine if surgery is necessary and will then provide your primary doctor or chiropractor with a written surgical recommendation.
